Whether you are flying into Vegas to kick off one of our signature Utah canyon treks or heading off on your own domestic adventure, getting to the trailhead usually involves a flight. And if your upcoming travel plans involve checking luggage, you’ll definitely want to budget a little extra for your journey this year.
Recently, the aviation industry has seen a massive, industry-wide shift in checked baggage pricing, with nearly every major U.S. carrier bumping up their fees in response to global events.
At Southwest Adventure Tours, we know that avoiding surprise costs is a key part of a stress-free trip. Here is a breakdown of the recent airline fee hikes, why they are happening, and how you can strategically pack to keep your travel budget intact.

The Latest Updates Across Major Carriers
If you haven't flown in the last few months, you might be surprised at the checkout screen. Following an initial hike by JetBlue in late March, almost every major airline quickly followed suit in April 2026:
-
Delta & United Airlines: Both carriers have bumped their fees on domestic and short-haul international flights by $10. You can now expect to pay $50 for your first checked bag at the airport ($45 if you prepay online). Second bags will now run you around $55 to $60.
-
Southwest Airlines: The biggest shock to many flyers is Southwest. After officially ending its famous "two free bags" policy for standard fares last year, they have just raised their fees again. A first checked bag is now $45, and a second is $55.
-
American Airlines & Alaska Airlines: Both airlines have also raised their fees, now charging around $40 for a first checked bag at the airport.
Why is this happening?
The short answer: a massive spike in fuel costs. Airlines are currently navigating a highly volatile operating environment due to geopolitical disruptions, specifically the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
When the conflict escalated earlier this year, U.S. jet fuel prices surged from around $2.50 a gallon to nearly $5.00 a gallon in major hubs. Furthermore, many airlines are being forced to fly longer, indirect routes to avoid conflict zones, burning even more fuel. To offset these multi-billion-dollar spikes in operational expenses, airlines are passing the bill on via unbundled baggage fees and slightly higher airfare.
The Trailhead Pro Tips: How to Beat the Fees
While we can't control airline pricing or global fuel markets, we can control how we pack! Here are our top strategies for minimizing those pesky luggage fees on your next trip:
1. Master the Carry-On (and Use Our Packing List!) When you travel with Southwest Adventure Tours, we take the guesswork out of packing. Before you try to cram your whole closet into a suitcase, check out our Official Southwest Adventure Tours Packing List. By rolling your clothes, wearing your bulkiest items (like your hiking boots or jacket) onto the plane, and using packing cubes, you can often fit everything on our list into a standard carry-on and personal item—completely bypassing the checked bag fee!
2. Always Prepay Online If you must check a bag, don't wait until you get to the airport counter. Almost all major airlines—including Delta, United, and American—now offer a $5 to $10 discount per bag if you pay for your luggage online or via their app at least 24 hours before your flight.
3. Leverage Your Travel Credit Cards If you fly with a specific airline regularly, look into their co-branded credit cards. Many of these cards offer a free first checked bag for the cardholder and sometimes even for companions on the same reservation, which can easily save you $100 on a round-trip flight.
4. Check Your Elite Status & Fare Class If you've racked up miles and earned elite medallion or loyalty status with a carrier, double-check your perks. Free checked luggage is often one of the first benefits to kick in. Additionally, while "Basic Economy" tickets look cheapest upfront, purchasing a slightly more expensive "Main Cabin" fare that includes a bag might actually come out cheaper overall. Always do the math before hitting purchase!
