Itinerary:

  •

Your Yosemite backpacking adventure begins in the iconic Yosemite Valley, surrounded by towering granite walls and cascading waterfalls. After arriving, you’ll transport your gear into the park and settle into the North Pines Backpacker’s Camp, a designated staging area for backcountry travelers.

This first day is all about preparation and connection. You’ll meet your expert guides and fellow hikers, followed by a comprehensive orientation session covering the route, safety protocols, and what to expect over the next six days. Your guides will lead a hands-on pack fitting and gear demonstration, ensuring your backpack is properly adjusted for comfort and efficiency on the trail.

As the sun sets over El Capitan and Half Dome, enjoy your first night in Yosemite with a sense of anticipation for the journey ahead.

  • Yosemite_Meadow

After an early start, your group will take a scenic hiker shuttle from Yosemite Valley up into the High Sierra, gaining elevation quickly and leaving the crowds behind. Upon arrival at the trailhead, your guided Yosemite thru-hike officially begins.

The trail winds through high-elevation terrain characterized by alpine forests, granite outcroppings, and sweeping vistas. As you hike deeper into the wilderness, you’ll begin to feel the remoteness that defines Yosemite’s backcountry.

Your destination is a backcountry campsite near a historic High Sierra Camp, where you’ll set up camp, enjoy a well-earned meal, and settle into the rhythm of life on the trail.

  • Yosemite Half Dome

Today is a true immersion into Yosemite’s High Country wilderness. Continuing your thru-hike, you’ll traverse a variety of alpine landscapes—from open meadows dotted with wildflowers (seasonal) to rugged granite terrain shaped by glacial forces.

This section of the trail offers a quieter, more remote experience, far from the heavily trafficked areas of Yosemite Valley. Along the way, your guides will share insight into the region’s geology, ecology, and natural history, adding depth to the journey.

After a full day of hiking, you’ll arrive at your second backcountry campsite, where you can relax, refuel, and take in the stillness of the Sierra Nevada backcountry under a star-filled sky.

  • Yosemite Group Photo

As you continue your Yosemite backpacking journey, today’s route begins a gradual descent out of the high alpine zone and toward one of the park’s most iconic landmarks—Half Dome.

The terrain begins to shift as you move from exposed high-country landscapes into forested trails and granite valleys. Anticipation builds as Half Dome becomes more prominent on the horizon, signaling your approach to the final stage of the adventure.

You’ll arrive at a strategically located backcountry camp near the base of Half Dome, positioning your group for an early summit attempt. After setting up camp, your guides will review the plan for the summit, including timing, safety considerations, and route details.

  • Yosemite Half Dome

Today is the highlight of your Yosemite backpacking trip: the Half Dome summit attempt.

Your guides will determine the optimal summit window based on weather, trail conditions, and group readiness. The preferred option is a sunrise ascent, allowing for cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and the flexibility to attempt again if needed. Alternatively, a sunset summit offers dramatic lighting and a unique perspective of Yosemite Valley bathed in golden light.

The climb includes steep switchbacks and the famous Half Dome cables route, requiring focus and determination. Reaching the summit is an unforgettable achievement, rewarding you with panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, the High Sierra, and beyond.

After your summit attempt, return to camp to rest and reflect on the experience.

  • Yosemite 1

If weather or conditions prevented a summit attempt on Day 5, you’ll have one final opportunity to reach the top of Half Dome with an early morning start.

Following the summit (or after breaking camp), you’ll begin your final descent along the legendary John Muir Trail, one of the most scenic hiking routes in the United States. The trail winds through granite landscapes, past waterfalls, and gradually returns you to the floor of Yosemite Valley.

Your journey concludes near Curry Village, marking the completion of an incredible 6-day Yosemite thru-hike from the High Sierra to the Valley. With miles of trail behind you and unforgettable memories made, you’ll leave with a deeper connection to one of America’s most iconic national parks.

Physical Demands of this Trip

This trip is rated Vigorous.

Participants will carry their own backpack weighing 35 to 40 lbs at a high elevation for several miles over steep, exposed, and rocky terrain, with constant and dramatic elevation gain and/or loss exceeding 2,000' or more per day on most days of this trip. Keep the high elevation of this trip in mind when training for this adventure, as backpacking/hiking will feel harder and use more energy than at lower elevations, especially if coming from a lower elevation/sea level. Previous backpacking experience is highly recommended; this is not a beginner's backpacking trip.

To maximize your enjoyment of the trip, we strongly encourage you to be involved in a consistent training regimen starting at least 3-6 months before the trip, ideally including training hikes with a weighted pack. We also recommend staying hydrated before departure to help mitigate the effects of hiking at high altitudes. Your overall fitness level is crucial to your enjoyment of this trip.

  • Hiking uphill or downhill with a 35-45lb backpack for 6-8 hours
  • Maintaining balance and footing on rugged, steep, or loose terrain
