Starting from Denver

Denver International is the largest airport in the Rockies and it is close to the park it serves: Estes Park and the eastern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park are around ninety minutes away, which is short enough that the first day of a trip is a real day rather than a transfer.

Further out, Colorado’s southwest corner β€” Mesa Verde, Durango, the San Juan mountains β€” is a long drive from Denver, closer to six or seven hours, so trips that go there are built as multi-day routes rather than as day trips.

Trail Ridge Road, the high crossing through Rocky Mountain, is seasonal: it typically opens around Memorial Day and closes with the first heavy snow in October. Itineraries that use it run inside that window.
