Starting from Moab

Moab is the rare gateway that is not a compromise. The Arches entrance is a few minutes north of town, the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands is about forty minutes west, and the Needles district and Dead Horse Point are both inside an easy morning’s drive.

Monument Valley is around two and a half hours south, which is why trips leaving from here often continue into the Navajo Nation rather than turning back.

Summer on this stretch of the Colorado River regularly runs over 100°F, and the light is best either side of it. Spring and autumn are the working season for anything involving a full day outdoors.

The town is small and the season is compressed, so lodging books early for spring and autumn. It is also the trailhead for a great deal that is not a national park — Dead Horse Point, the Colorado River corridor, and the slickrock country the mountain biking is famous for.

Timed-entry reservations have applied at Arches in the busy months in several recent seasons. The details change every year, so check the park's own site for the year you are travelling rather than assuming last season's rules.
