Planning a trip to Explore Alaska

Alaska is not a driving destination in the way the Southwest is. There are very few roads, distances between them are enormous, and a great deal of the state is reached by boat or by small aircraft — which is why trips here are built around a fixed route rather than around a rental car.

The season is genuinely short. Most of what operates runs from late May to mid-September; either side of that, lodges close and the road and rail services stop.

The trade-off in the middle of it is daylight. In late June the sun barely sets in the interior, which makes a long day possible in a way it never is further south.

Wildlife is the reason most of these itineraries exist — bears at the salmon runs, whales in the coastal waters, moose and caribou on the tundra — and it is seasonal too, tied to when the fish and the feed are there.
