Planning a trip to Glacier National Park

Going-to-the-Sun Road is the reason most people come. It runs fifty miles across the park over Logan Pass at 6,646 feet, and it is normally fully open only from late June or early July until the middle of October — the plough crews work at it for months, and the opening date is announced each year rather than scheduled.

When the road is shut, the park is still open at both ends; it just becomes two separate visits, from West Glacier and from St Mary, with a long drive around the outside between them.

Vehicle reservations for the corridor have applied in several recent seasons alongside the entry pass, and the details change year to year — check the park’s own site before travelling.

This is grizzly country, more so than the Utah and Colorado parks, and the park’s guidance on bear spray, food storage and hiking in groups is written for that rather than as boilerplate.
