Almost everything visitors come to South Dakota for is in its south-west corner, within about ninety minutes of Rapid City: Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave in the Black Hills, and the Badlands an hour east of them.
Custer State Park is the one that surprises people. It holds a free-roaming bison herd of well over a thousand animals, and the Wildlife Loop Road through it is genuinely a wildlife drive; the Needles Highway alongside it threads granite spires through tunnels cut barely wider than a vehicle.
The Black Hills are forested and cool and sit around 5,000 feet; the Badlands, an hour away, are bare rock and can be thirty degrees hotter on the same afternoon. Trips here usually take in both, and the packing has to cover both.
One date to plan around: the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in early August brings several hundred thousand people into the Black Hills and fills lodging for a hundred miles.
