Starting from Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City International is the closest large airport to the northern half of the Colorado Plateau, and it is the reason most long Utah itineraries begin here rather than in Las Vegas. Moab and the Arches and Canyonlands entrances are about four hours south-east. Bryce Canyon is about four hours south, Zion about four and a half, and Capitol Reef sits between them.

It also faces the other way. Grand Teton is roughly five hours north, and Yellowstone’s west entrance about six, which puts both within reach of a trip that starts and ends at the same airport as a Utah one.

The short trips leaving from here are day tours: out after breakfast, back the same evening, no lodging to book. They suit a free day either side of a conference, or a first day on the ground while the jet lag wears off.
