Trips leaving Portland

The Pacific Northwest gateway to Crater Lake and the Cascade Range, about four and a half hours from the rim.

Starting from Portland

Crater Lake is roughly four and a half hours south of Portland, which is the practical reason trips from here are multi-day rather than out-and-back.

The park is a snow park for much of the year. The Rim Drive is normally clear from around July into October and closed the rest of the time, and the lake itself is often the only thing visible above the weather โ€” so the window an itinerary runs in is not a preference, it is the road status.

The drive south crosses the Cascades and the high desert on the far side of them, which is most of what the first day of one of these trips actually is.

Portland itself is the wet side of the state. The drive south goes over the Cascades and out into high desert on the far side, and the change in weather across that crossing is often more dramatic than anything at the destination.

Because the rim season is short, a Crater Lake itinerary in June or October is really an itinerary about everything around it โ€” the Umpqua river valley, the volcanic country, the coast โ€” with the lake as whatever the road status allows.
