Planning a trip to Oregon

Crater Lake is the state’s one national park and it is unlike anything else in the system: a caldera left by the collapse of Mount Mazama around 7,700 years ago, filled by nothing but snow and rain. At 1,943 feet it is the deepest lake in the United States, and it has no inlet or outlet, which is why the water is the colour it is.

It is a snow park for most of the year. The Rim Drive is normally open only from around July into October, and the road crews are clearing forty feet of accumulation in some winters.

Getting there is a drive: about four and a half hours south of Portland, across the Cascades and into the high country on the far side.

The other Oregon most trips take in is the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland and the coast west of it, both of which work in seasons when the rim road does not.
