San Francisco → Yosemite National Park
California has more national parks than any other state — nine of them — and they cover a range nothing else does: Yosemite and the giant sequoias in the Sierra, Death Valley below sea level in the Mojave, Joshua Tree in the southern desert, and the redwood coast in the far north.
Distance is the constraint everyone underestimates. Yosemite is about four hours from San Francisco, Sequoia and Kings Canyon another two beyond it, and the redwoods are a day’s drive north of the city in the other direction.
Season splits the state in half. The Sierra high country is closed by snow for around half the year — Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road both — while the desert parks are at their best in exactly those months and brutal in July.
The waterfall season in the Sierra is short and early: fed by snowmelt, at their strongest in May and June, and much reduced by late summer.
