Planning a trip to Hikes in Arches National Park

Arches is compact and almost everything worth walking is off one paved road, which is what makes a day here so productive — and why it fills so early.

Delicate Arch is the one people come for: three miles round trip, about 480 feet of climbing, most of it up open slickrock with no shade at any point. In summer that is a sunrise or an evening walk, not a midday one.

The Devils Garden trail at the end of the road is the longer day, up to around eight miles if the whole primitive loop is done, and it links Landscape Arch — one of the longest natural spans in the world — to several more beyond it.

The Fiery Furnace is the exception: a maze of fins that can only be entered on a ranger-led walk or with a permit, both limited and both booked ahead.

Timed entry reservations have applied in peak months in recent seasons, and the window changes year to year — check the park’s own site for the year you are travelling.
