Planning a trip to Explore Wyoming

Wyoming holds Yellowstone and Grand Teton, joined end to end by a parkway, and they are usually done as one trip because the road between them takes under an hour.

They are not the same kind of park. Yellowstone is enormous and its interest is spread across it — geyser basins, canyon, lake and the Lamar Valley for wildlife are hours apart on a figure-of-eight road system. Grand Teton is compact and vertical: the range rises straight out of the valley floor with no foothills, and most of what there is to see is visible from one road.

Winter changes the rules completely. Most of Yellowstone’s interior roads close to cars from around early November to late April, and the way in is a snowcoach or a snowmobile with a licensed operator — which is why the winter trips look nothing like the summer ones.

Altitude is the other planning fact. Most of both parks sits between 6,500 and 8,000 feet, so nights are cold in every month of the year and snow in June is not unusual.
