What a winter trip is
Snowcoach and snowmobile into parks most visitors only ever see in summer. Yellowstone in February is a different place from Yellowstone in July, and it is reached differently — the interior roads are closed to cars, so the way in is a tracked vehicle.
The trade is visitors for cold. Geyser basins with nobody else in them, bison and wolves against snow, and daytime temperatures that regularly sit below freezing. The operator supplies the outer layers for the machine days.
The season is short and it is set by the park, not by the itinerary: the over-snow season in Yellowstone runs roughly from mid-December to mid-March.
